The Power of One

Rachel, a 9-year-old girl, decides to give back to society on her birthday. Instead of receiving presents from her family and friends, she asks for a donation of $9 from each of them, the equivalent of her age. She sets herself a goal of raising $300 for charity work, but unfortunately falls short by $80. However, she doesn't give up and promises to do better next year.

Unexpectedly, God calls her to rest, and her family is left heartbroken. But what's truly remarkable is the fact that her determination to help others never wavered, even in her last moments. Her family shares her dream of raising $300 for charity with people, and their response is overwhelming. People from all over the world donated $9 each, and before they knew it, the charity was able to raise $1.3 million.

This story highlights the impact that a single selfless act can have on numerous people. I recall another selfless individual, a lecturer, who is committed to helping others achieve their goals and would push for change to support his students' growth.

I had a personal encounter with Dr Parker while pursuing my postgraduate degree. I faced challenges with my supervisor, but upon sharing my situation with this lecturer, I was given the opportunity to start my project work under his guidance. Dr Parker was highly recommended by his colleague who was aware of his dedication to ensuring his students' success. Since then, he has been a mentor to me.

George Parker is a mathematics lecturer who not only teaches his subject but also prepares his students for the workplace by including effective communication, writing, and resume-building in his course structure. Despite being diagnosed with cancer in 2015, he continues to give his best and encourages everyone to be their best selves. He is always willing to support not only his students but all others, sharing his home and going out of his way to help, even while needing funds for his treatments.

He has been able to support himself through monthly chemotherapy, continuous major surgeries, and minor surgeries with the help of his close-knit family and friends. However, he requires additional funding for a surgery that goes beyond the support of his immediate network.

In the spirit of Rachel's inspiring story, I encourage you to donate your next birthday to support someone who has always put others before themselves. Consider donating the equivalent of your age in dollars to support Dr. Parker. It's not about the amount you give, but rather the intention and heart behind it. Rachel's selfless act of giving was a beacon of hope and inspired others to give. What will be said of you?
